Craig Larsen and I were at La Marzocco Cafe on Friday where had the good fortune of listening to Kent Bakke, former CEO of La Marzocco. He talked about the the early days of coffee in Seattle, going to Venice to talk to espresso machine manufactures, and meeting the Bambi family at the La Marzocco factory in Florence. Kent gave an overview of the history of La Marzocco. He outlined the challenges of working with Starbucks and later working without Starbucks.
He also stressed the importance of the human element in coffee like sharing coffee with friends and ensuring that coffee growers can make a living. After the presentation he graciously invited us to meet him for coffee and visit and tour their factory in Florence.
